Long Haired Dave's Elm Seed
In the spring (late March in DFW) the elm trees drop seed. The
carp come up and sip them right off the top of the water and it
can be an exciting time to fish for them.
The fly pattern is super simple; rust colored dubbing or thread is
built up for the "stem ball", dun-olive Superfine dubbing for the
seed, tan craft foam for the pod/husk, and black Antron parachute
post.
The picture shows a stem, I usually leave those off because they're
too much trouble and the carp don't care.
Make a rust dubbing or thread ball at the back of a #10 dry fly
hook. Tie in some antron for a parachute post, but leave it long...
around an inch tall. Dub the dun-olive dry fly stuff into a nice fat
seed. Make a hole in the craft foam (shaped like a tear drop, length
of a dime but touch skinnier) with a bodkin. Push a bobbin threader
through the foam and use it to grab the antron and pull it through the
foam. A little Zap-a-Gap to hold the foam down to the hook and you're
ready for a few short but fun days a year.
